ARE IMPORTERS CONCERNED about supply interruptions at overseas factories and buying more products? Are they trying to beat inevitable price increases? Or has business turned up and empty U.S. warehouses need to be replenished? For whatever reason, U.S. distributors and manufacturers turned up their purchases and imported substantially higher volumes of music and audio products in the first quarter of 2011 compared to the year-earlier period. Import data for the first quarter of 2011 reveal big gains in key industry segments: Acoustic Guitars +XX%, Electric Guitars +XX%, School Music Products +XX% and Synthesizers +XX%. With the exception of a few categories that posted modest declines, the import figures for the first three months of 2011 surpassed 2009 totals and are only slightly behind 2008 figures.
For the first quarter, imports of all school instruments rose substantially: Brasswinds +XX%, Clarinets +XX%, Saxophones +XX%, Flutes +XX%, and Stringed Instruments +XX%. The year-to-date School Music totals for 2011 are now just XX% shy of the record total posted in the first quarter of 2008.
After three consecutive quarters of increases, Acoustic Piano imports declined X.X% for the period. Average pricing on acoustic pianos rose X.X% on a per unit basis and Chinese producers increased their share of total imports from XX% last year to XX% in 2011. Import data for electronic keyboards was mixed: Synthesizers +XX%, Portable Keyboards less than $XXX Retail -XX% and Portable Keyboards more than $XXX retail -XX%. Accessory imports surged for the quarter as well: Plastic Music Cases +XX%, Guitar Strings +XX%, Harmonicas +XX%, and Woodwind Accessories +XX%.
Price increases from Asian producers, an inevitable combination of rising labor costs and commodity prices, showed up this quarter led by Acoustic Pianos +X.X%, Acoustic Guitars +X.X%, Electric Guitars +X.X% and Power Amplifiers +X.X%.
