MTBE (methyl tert-butyl ether) can be well compatible with gasoline. It is an ideal blending ingredient for the production of leadless and oxygen-containing gasoline with a high octane number. MTBE can not only effectively increase the octane number and combustion efficiency of gasoline and make the tail gas of automobiles be leadless, but also can improve the performances of automobiles, decrease the emissions of CO by XX% and reduce the emissions of other hazardous substances (such as ozone, benzene and butadiene, etc.) and the cost of gasoline.
In foreign countries, around XX% of MTBE is used as an octane number improver for gasoline and an oxygen-containing compound. In addition, as an excellent solvent and extracting agent, MTBE can also be used to produce high-purity isobutylene from CX resources through the counter reaction. High-purity isobutylene produced through cracking can also be used as a raw material for some chemical products, such as methyl methacrylate (MMA) and butyl rubbers.
Capacity of MTBE grows constantly
In 2010, there were XXX MTBE plants in China, with a total capacity of X.XX million t/a. PetroChina, Sinopec and CNOOC had XX MTBE plants in total, with a combined capacity of X.XXX million t/a, accounting for XX% of the national total. Local refineries had XX plants, with a combined capacity of X.XXXX million t/a, accounting for XX% of the total.
Pushed by the constant upgrading of quality standards for vehicle-purposed gasoline, the demand for MTBE in China will still maintain a relatively rapid growth. At the same time, EU removes the environmental protection alarm for MTBE, so China's capacity of MTBE will enter the stage of rapid growth in the next few years. In the near future, MTBE plants will constantly be constructed in China, with a total new capacity of XXX XXX t/a. It is expected that China's capacity of MTBE will reach X.XX million t/a in 2012.
