China occupies more than half of the world capacity
The world's total capacity of ethyl acetate is around X,XX million t/a in 2011, of which XX.X% is distributed in Mainland China (around X.X million t/a), X.X% in North America (XXX XXX t/a), X.X% in South and Central America (XXX XXX t/a), XX.X% in Western Europe (XXX XXX t/a), X.X% in Central and Eastern Europe (XXX XXX t/a) and about XX.X% in other Asian countries and regions (XXX XXX t/a).
The production processes of ethyl acetate in foreign countries include the esterification process, the acetaldchyde process, the ethylene process and the ester exchange process (having byproduct PVB (polyvinyl butyral).The combined capacity of ethyl acetate produced with the acetaldehyde process, the ethylene process and the ester exchange process is around XXX XXX t/a, accounting for around XX% of the total. Except for Mainland China, the output of ethyl acetate in major countries and regions has been relatively stable or seen a downward trend in recent years.
There are more than XX ethyl acetate producers in other countries outside China. Due to weak competitiveness, some ethyl acetate plants have suspended production. Among these ethyl acetate producers, five have a capacity of XXX XXX t/a or above each.
Capacity continues to grow in China
China's ethyl acetate sector has developed rapidly in recent years. The capacity of ethyl acetate in China reached X.X million t/a in 2010, and the output was around X.XX million tons, with an average annual growth of XX.X% and XX.X%, respectively, during 2002-2010.
There are around XX ethyl acetate producers in China, with a total capacity of over XX XXX t/a. Among the producers, XX have an ethyl acetate capacity of more than XX XXX t/a each, and their combined capacity reaches X.XX million t/a, accounting for around XX% of the total; and X have a capacity of over XXX XXX t/a each, and their combined capacity reaches X.XX million t/a, accounting for around XX.X% of the total.
Ethyl acetate projects under construction or planning in China mainly include a XXX XXX t/a ethyl acetate project of Anhui Huayi Chemical Co Ltd, the ethyl acetate PDP development project of Yankuang Cathay Coal Chemicals Co Ltd (expanding the company's ethyl acetate capacity to XXX XXX t/a), and ethyl acetate and butyl acetate cogeneration projects in Sanmu Chemical (Jiangsu) Co Ltd, Sanmu Chemical (Sichuan) Co Ltd and Sanmu Chemical (Hubei) Co Ltd, If all these projects are completed, the industrial concentration level of ethyl acetate in China will be further enhanced, and the market competition will be fiercer.
Demand increases, but overcapacity is serious
Ethyl acetate producers in China mainly use the esterification process. Major producers have realized the integration of upstream/downstream production and formed an industrial chain: acetic acid [right arrow] ethyl acetate/ butyl acetate + ethanol [right arrow] ethyl acetate.
Ethyl acetate is one of fatty acid esters with the most extensive applications. It has excellent solubility and is used as a fast drying solvent. It is mainly used as an active solvent in coatings, inks and adhesives and also used as a process solvent in the production of pharmaceuticals and in organic chemical synthesis. As ethyl acetate naturally exists in many fruits, it has extensive applications in the flavor and fragrance sector and is used as a flavoring agent and a process extracting agent.
In the coatings and ink sector, ethyl acetate can replace toluene, xylene, methyl isobutyl ketone and methyl ethyl ketone, which are listed as HAPS (hazardous air pollutants). In recent years, people have paid more attention to environmental protection, heath and safety; construction, automobile and flavor and fragrance industries have developed rapidly; and foreign countries have asked for increasingly stricter requirements on the environment friendliness and safety of China's exported products. Due to these reasons, China's demand for ethyl acetate has grown rapidly.
In 2010, China consumed around XXX XXX tons of ethyl acetate and exported about XXX XXX tons. The capacity of ethyl acetate in China is now surplus. It is expected that the ethyl acetate consumption in China will grow XX% annually during the Twelfth Five-Year Program period (2011-2015) and will reach X.XX million tons in 2015. Major drivers for the demand growth of ethyl acetate in China will be coatings and adhesives industries. China's capacity of ethyl acetate is X.X million t/a in 2011 and is expected to reach X.X million t/a in 2015. The existing capacity of ethyl acetate in China can meet the future market demand. After the startup of the new ethyl acetate projects under construction or planning, the overcapacity of ethyl acetate in China will be more serious.
Outdated enterprises will be eliminated
(X) China now becomes the world's leading ethyl acetate producer and consumer. The domestic ethyl acetate sector has made substantial progress in recent years, and significant improvement has been achieved in production scale, reaction efficiency, distillation efficiency, facility intensity, energy comprehensive utilization rate and product quality.
(X) Ethyl acetate producers in China firstly synthesize acetic acid using vapor phase carbonylation of methanol, and then synthesize ethyl acetate through the esterification reaction. Most large-scale producers in China have realized the integrated upstream/downstream production. In the case of high international oil prices, the esterification process has remarkable advantages over the acetaldehyde condensation process and the ethylene addition process. China's ethyl acetate industry therefore has marked competitive advantages.
(X) China's ethyl acetate capacity is now surplus, and the market competition is very fierce. Some small producers with high production costs, low management level and weak competitiveness will be gradually eliminated.
(X) While developing the domestic market, China's ethyl acetate producers should pay more attention to exploring the export market and try to reduce production costs, improve product quality and enhance enterprise management level to participate in the global competition.
