NEW YORK -- Beauty products had a strong year in drug store chains, as women rewarded the trade class for its selection, pricing and convenience.
Of the top-selling XX beauty categories, XX posted gains in the XX months ended in mid-fall, according to SymphonyIRI Group Inc. And of the XX segments that saw declines, many had nominal overall sales.
Notable advances for major categories included the X% increase for the No. X beauty segment, women's hair coloring, and the X.X% increase for the No. X segment, hair conditioner/cream rinse products.
Other noteworthy gains were recorded by nail polish, with sales up XX%,and razors, with a XX% increase.
Prestige makeup was especially strong last year, according to NPD Group Inc. "In makeup, while neutral tones and face products led in the past, across countries we see strong gains in color categories of lip and nail color and a new focus on eye shadow and eye definition with growth in eye pencil and brow products," noted Karen Grant, vice president and senior global industry analyst at NPD. "In makeup, the joy of color is seen with more than half of the top XX new products (and seven of the top XX) being from an eye or lip category."
Kline and Co. reported that despite leaner times some consumers are willing to pay a premium for natural products, driving double-digit sales growth for such items. Moreover, a brand's appeal is enhanced and the demand for "greener" and usually simpler packaging can ultimately reduce costs. The overhead from high oil prices has already seen leading personal care marketers adopt lighter packaging to cut freight costs and to minimize plastic components, with the added benefit of implied environmental awareness.
