NEW YORK -- Although general merchandise has performed poorly at drug chains, the business continues to offer high margins.
While sales dropped in segments ranging from batteries to vacuum bags, chain drug retailers still view the category as an essential one in their quest to draw fill-in visits between shopping trips to supermarkets and discount stores.
Just two of the top XX GM segments--hair accessories and baby accessories--posted gains. Losses ranged from X.X% for ninth-place category socks to XX % for No. XX soap dishes.
Still, a number of chains have laid claim to the GM market with distinctive offerings and advertising. Discount Drug Mart for example, lists photo processing and digital pants as among the comprehensive offerings that define it as a one-stop shopping destination. The chain strives to fulfill its slogan "We save you the runaround" with everyday-low prices and broad assortments to allow customers to buy everything they need in one place, says marketing coordinator Amanda Stefanski.
Navarre Discount Pharmacy employs general merchandise as part of its well-established ethnic merchandising. The chain caters to one subset of its Hispanic shopping base with the Bene Casa arepera (arepa maker) for South Americans who want to prepare one of their favorite food items.
When it comes to seasonal general merchandise, Kinney Drugs every May surrounds the exterior of its stores with gas grills and other warm-weather products, notes vice president of retail merchandising Rick Cognetti Jr.
"We differentiate ourselves from our competition in the spring and summer seasonal goods area," he said last year. "We use our sidewalks quite successfully."
In-store items for late fall and winter at Kinney include shovels, scrapers, salt, hand warmers and even cleated shoe covers for traction on ice.
Local market knowledge has led to success with such items as a $XXX infrared heater.
Seattle-based Bartell Drugs' latest prototype features the Creative Print Studio with the new Kodak Adaptive Picture Exchange (APEX), which provides same-day service for prints and enlargements, double-sided photo books, calendars, customized greeting cards, and other products.
Customers can access their images directly through the kiosk from such online-sharing sites as Facebook, the Kodak Gallery and Google Picasa Web albums to create and print premium photo products and Kodak Picture Movie DVDs.
The studio is one of five new product areas spotlighted through lighting, signage and furnishings.
