NEW YORK -- Over-the-counter drugs make up the top-selling front-end category in the chain drug industry, generating more than XX% of storewide volume, or nearly $XX billion.
The broad selection of O-T-Cs in drug stores underscores the essential role the trade class plays in the country's health care system, especially at a time when economic pressures make doctor's visits increasingly difficult to afford.
Consumers and taxpayers could save $X.X billion annually if half of the unnecessary visits to physicians were avoided by more personal health management, including greater use of O-T-Cs, according to a study cited by the Consumer Healthcare Products Association. Physicians note that, on average, more than XX% of office visits result from minor ailments that could be self-managed by patients, including by the use of O-T-Cs. This amounts to tens of millions of unnecessary appointments each year that could have been avoided.
Retailers say drug chains' array of nonprescription products helps position them as frontline health care providers. And as more drug chains emphasize wellness, the trade class is seeing strong growth in many O-T-C categories.
According to SymphonyIRI Group Inc., sales in XX of the top XX O-T-C categories increased in the year ended March XX. Of those that experienced declines, only one--nasal products--saw a decrease of more than X.X%. Of the brands that SymphonyIRI ranks as the XX best-selling H&BAs, just five are beauty products.
Drug stores' success in the O-T-C market results in large part from their trusted pharmacists. Their accessibility and recommendations reinforce the sector's ability to provide patients with the medications they need to treat myriad conditions.
Among retailers that are making the most of their O-T-C sections is USA Drug. The weak flu season this past winter notwithstanding, the chain has been ringing up increased sales of O-T-Cs, especially cough/cold products. These include Allegra, which has continued to perform strongly since its switch from prescription status, says USA Drug president and chief executive officer Joe Courtright.
Also driving the gains at Little Rock, Ark.-based USA Drug are expanded O-T-C sections--selling space has been doubled in some remodeled units. The upshot is that O-T-C same-store volume last year climbed X%. As well, the category has been propelled by the retailer's implementation of a new system to predict promotional ad sales, which has reduced out-of-stocks.
According to a report from the market research firm IBISWorld, the O-T-C cough/cold segment is growing at an average annual rate of X.X% and is expected to hit $X.X billion by the end of this year.
