NEW YORK -- Beauty never looked better in chain drug stores.
Of the XX biggest beauty categories in drug chains, XX posted growth in the year ended in late March. Gains were as large as XX% for nail polish, XX% for the overall nails segment and XX% for grooming supplies.
Nail care, color cosmetics and sun care are three of the strongest beauty areas, says TABS Group Inc. founder and chief executive officer Kurt Jetta.
"In color cosmetics, while such stalwarts as Maybe]line, Revlon and L'Oreal are turning in gains in the mid single digits, it's many of the second-tier players that are really driving category growth," Jetta says. He cites XX%-plus growth for wet n wild from Markwins International and Rimmel London from Coty Inc.
Nail care growth is now a function of strong private label gains in implements and polish removers, he adds. Additionally, the artificial naris segment has seen double-digit gains from all of the top players--Kiss, Broadway, Nailene and Fing'rs--as consumer trade up to more premium items.
The Essie nail care brand, Jetta notes, has established a decent presence, with sales productivity on a par with larger premium counterparts.
One of the most high-profile new beauty launches is the Simple skin care line from Unilever. "Early results are solid, but not overwhelming," Jetta comments. "Importantly though, the brand is gaining sales velocity as it continues to expand its distribution in terms of both door count and SKUs per door (most new brands see velocity declines as they expand door count). This is a positive sign for the long-term viability of the brand, especially since we are still in the early stages of consumer support."
Top sun care brands had a good season last year as consumers migrated to higher-price, high-SPF items. This year is looking even better, with sales up more than XX% compared to 2011. It's not too late for retailers to reassess the category to determine if they are sufficiently stocked, says Jetta.
Genevieve Monsma, beauty director at More magazine, noted recently that the recession may have driven women out of specialty shops and into drug stores in hopes of getting more for their money, but it had much less of an effect on unit volume. "To many women, hair and skin care is like toothpaste or deodorant," she commented. "Giving it up is not an option."
"The good news for the women who are shopping in the mass market is that the options are endless (almost overwhelmingly so), and they prove that the old adage 'You get what you pay for' is not always true," she added. "The skin care, hair care and makeup women are finding on shelves are quite effective, and the prices are palatable."
