X. World's CPL capacity increases steadily
In recent years, the world's capacity to make CPL (caprolactam) has increased steadily, reaching X.XX million t/a in 2011. Of that, the capacity of CPL in in North America, Western Europe, Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, and Central and South America was X.XX million t/a, X.XX million t/a, XXX thousand t/a, X.XX million t/a and XX thousand t/a, respectively, accounting for XX.XX%, XX.XX%, XX.XX%, XX.XX% and X.XX%. CPL capacity is mainly held by BASF, DSM, Honeywell, UBE, Chinese Taiwan Petroleum Development Corporation, Sinopec Group and South Korea's Capro Corporation. In 2011, their combined capacity was X.XXX million t/a, XX.XX% of the global total.
It is expected that the global total CPL capacity will exceed X.X million t/a by 2015.The capacity expansion in Asia is the main component of of global capacity growth, and Asia will have additional capacity of more than X.X million t/a by 2015. In future, the development center of the world's CPL sector will shift to Asia. The CPL output of Russia, South Korea, Thailand and India are constantly increasing, forcing CPL that has routinely been exported to these regions to be rerouted to China and other Asian markets, and making Asian markets more competitive. CPL capacity in North America and Western Europe will only increase slowly due to the sluggish growth of the downstream demand.
In 2011, the global total consumption of CPL was around X.XX million tons. Consumption of CPL is mainly concentrated in North America, Western Europe and Asia: XXX thousand tons, XXX thousand tons and X.XXX million tons, respectively, accounting for XX.XX%, XX.XX% and XX.XX% of the total.
X. China's capacity of CPI, expands rapidly
In the last two years, China's CPL capacity has increased considerably. In 2011, Zhejiang Juhua Group Corporation expanded its capacity of CPL to XX thousand t/a, and the total capacity of CPL in China reached XXX thousand t/a. In March 2012, Shandong Haili Chemical Industry Co., Ltd built its first-phase XXX thousand t/a CPL unit and put it into operation. In April 2012, Zhejiang Juhua Group Corporation completed its capacity expansion, and the capacity of CPL in the company reached XX thousand t/a. As of May 2012, China had five CPL producers with a total capacity of XXX thousand t/a. The XX thousand t/a unit in Sinopec Shijiazhuang Chemical Fiber Co., Ltd uses the toluene process, while all other units use the benzene process.
With the continuous growth capacity, China's CPL output has also increased constantly. In 2011, China's CPL output was XXX.X thousand tons, up X.XX% year-on-year.
During the XXth Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015), many CPL units will be constructed or expanded in China. If XX% of these projects are completed on schedule, by the end of 2015 China's total CPL capacity is expected to be more than X.X million t/a, and China will become the most important CPL producer in the world.
X. The downstream demand for CPL is strong in China
In recent years, China's nylon yarn, cord fabrics and polyamide engineering plastics sectors developed rapidly, and their demand for CPL has constantly increased. In 2005, China's apparent consumption of CPL reached XXX thousand tons. In 2008, it was XXX.X thousand tons, down X.XX% from 2007. With the gradual improvement of the domestic economy, the demand from downstream sectors was vigorous, and China's apparent consumption of CPL increased significantly. It reached X.XXX million tons in 2011, up X.XX% year-on-year. From 2006 to 2011, the average annual growth rate of China's apparent CPL consumption reached X.XX%. China's self-sufficiency rate of CPL also increased from XX.X% in 2005 to XX.X% in 2008, and further to XX.X% in 2011.
In China, CPL is mainly used to produce nylon X fiber and nylon X engineering plastics. China produced X.XX million tons of nylon fibers in 2011, up around X.X% year-on-year. Of that total, nylon X fibers consumed around XXX thousand tons of CPL, accounting for around XX.X% of the total. China's nylon fiber sector will maintain relatively rapid growth in the next few years and the demand for CPL in making cords will become a major driver for fiber-grade CPL. It is expected that the demand for CPL in nylon X fiber will reach around X.X million tons by 2015.
The main non-fiber uses of China-made nylon X are in domestic plastics (mainly palm yams and fishing net yarns), engineering plastics (mainly castings for automobiles and electric appliances) and bi-oriented nylon films. The consumption of CPL in nylon X for non-fiber uses in China was around XXX thousand tons in 2011, accounting for around XX.X% of the total 2011 CPL consumption in China. The demand for CPL in nylon X for non-fiber uses will grow fast before 2015. The demand growth of nylon X in engineering plastics will be the most significant. It is expected that the demand for CPL in nylon X for non-fiber uses will reach around XXX thousand tons by 2015. At that time China's total demand for CPL will reach around X.X million tons. The country's CPL capacity will be more than X.X million t/a and will meet the actual production needs. A cautious attitude should therefore be taken toward new CPL units or expansion.
