Global rice trade is expected to be relatively flat year-to-year as a sizeable increase in Indonesian imports is largely offset by a decline in imports by the Philippines. While Thailand is likely to achieve record export levels in 2004, other suppliers such as Pakistan and Vietnam are expected to increase exports in 2005, taking some market share from Thailand.

BMI View: The Thai agriculture sector consistently contributes an average 11% to the country's GDP and employs about one-third of the total working population. Thus, it is understandable why competing political parties are inclined to propose agriculture-related policies during an election, as was the case in the recent July elections. That said, we believe that more long-term policies would benefit the key export industries of rice, sugar and livestock to better develop their competitive advantage.
Key Trends:

Sugar consumption growth to 2015: 49.3% to 3.1mn tonnes. ...

BMI View: Agriculture has been consistently contributing an average of 11% to the country's GDP. The main contributors are rice, sugar and livestock industries which are highly export-oriented. We continue to foresee strong growth in these industries on the back of strong private investment.

Rice Production to 2014/15: 15.7%. We forecast rice production in Thailand to rebound from 2009/10's poor output to reach 20.7mn tonnes in 2010/11. This is because damage to rice crops from droughts and floods is anticipated to be less severe in 2010/11 than it was for 2009/10. Export ...

The El Niño Southern Oscillation weather pattern affected crops like rice and sugar though not nearly as much as we had expected, given the wetter Q410. According to the Bangkok Post, Thailand's food exports in H110 grew a robust 15.9%t year-on-year to THB411.63bn. Estimates for the entire year are THB830.16bn, which would be a 10% rise from 2009.

Rice Production to 2014/15: 10.6%. We are forecasting rice production in Thailand to rebound from 2009/10's estimated output of 19.4mn tonnes to reach 20.7mn tonnes in 2010/11. This is because damage to rice ...
